Comeback Daniil Medvedev Claims First Title in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 titles have been won on hard courts

A comeback the Russian player claimed his first championship for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The athlete, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a difficult season, winning just a single victory at the major tournaments and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

Medvedev's unpredictability on the professional circuit - and difficulties with his serving in especial - led to him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually separating with long-term mentor his previous coach.

Now working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, Medvedev has gradually improved in the last few weeks - peaking in a closely contested three-set victory over opponent Moutet.

This marks his first trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hardcourt from March of 2023.

Victory also means Medvedev has achieved 21 victories at twenty-one distinct competitions.

"For the first time I have attended a event with my children together, so to get a championship is particularly special," commented tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my second daughter her name, because the first title I won when my child my daughter was delivered was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his last six championship matches, including in Halle in the past months.

Medvedev's defensive play style and frequent reactions on the tennis court had caused some to question if his capacity to perform at the elite level was over.

Yet the 29-year-old has made changes in the past month, making an effort to advance forward and compete positively, reinforced by an improved serving game.

He fought back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the difficult opponent, securing 4 of the concluding five games to take the lead.

The pair exchanged break points in the second set before the challenger, attempting for his initial professional title, gained dominance to push for a decider.

He rescued four early chances in a competitive final set before the Russian secured a break to that score to serve for the match.

Appropriately, he secured victory with a point at the net area, with Moutet incapable to handle a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
