Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
