The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
